So, people still read me. I think this is because of forums on Reddit, but I consistently get comments on a weekly basis from people who were toddlers when I was writing HP fanfic. Someone recently noted that it's been nearly twenty years since I wrote "Let's Pretend the War Is Over." That kind of blew my mind, but, yeah, it's been that long. I received two comments recently that hit me to the core, like I was in tears reading these comments. It wasn't about my writing, it was about how certain fics I wrote affected them. Made a huge difference in their lives.

And that's what I miss about fandom and I don't mean getting super positive feedback. I mean the community that thrived under LJ. Yes, it could be toxic (and was at times!), but despite its flaws, you could create a meaningful group of friends, and I did. But it was also more than that. It's hard to explain to people who weren't in fandom that the community was amazing and the creativity inspired by various media was exhilarating. I always have maintained that my fannish writing was loads better than my "real" writing, and I still think that. I don't know why. Galaxy Quest, which is one of my favorite movies, BTW, showcased to perfection the silliness of fandom (and why can't we be silly now and then?) but also community. Notice how all those kids just grooved on the concept of the Omega-13 and worked together, had different strengths. It's an awesome commentary on fandom, its warts and its strengths. Getting comments that say, you made a difference in my life through your writing make me remember why I was in fandom for over twenty years and how much it meant to me. And others.

comments

Okay, this is weird. I acknowledge this. But I took my fic the Dorset House and changed the POV from close third Harry to first-person Draco. I lost some plot stuff that is important, but I was able to include other character-related material that was also important, but wouldn't work from Harry's POV. I think this is an interesting exercise. I've always felt I was a character-driven writer and my own assessment of these two fics side by side, proves this to me. Draco's POV feels so much more immediate to me, but then I've always had an impossible time writing Harry.
Did I see all three? Yes, I did. Did I cry pretty much through all of Return of the King? Yes, I did. The remastering was great. Even on a big screen when Gandalf arrives to save the day at Helm's Deep and they ride down that steep slope, in previous versions the CGI was pretty terrible. Brown blobs on other brown blobs that were supposed to be horses. This remastering has them looking like riders. It was MARVELOUS. I'm still on a high. So worth it. In these dark times, it was very uplifting.
My daughter is a die-hard Swiftie. So be it. Some of her co-workers are also Swifties so there's a lot of water cooler chat about Taylor Swift's life in general, her love life, this and that, you know the typical fannish blahblahblah. We were talking last week about Taylor Swift and her latest drop. She doesn't feel it's her best effort but it's Taylor Swift so there you are. And my daughter expressed her frustration because so much mental effort and drama is being spent on whether Taylor's relationship with this football player is "real" or just for fun or are they soul mates. And my daughter has to restrain herself from making gagging noises because it doesn't matter, does it? But apparently it does to many, many fans. She got the usual spiel from me about fans self-identifying to an extraordinary degree with fannish icons and how it can get a little (or a lot) weird depending. Which, of course, made me go down the rabbit hole of some of the more egregious examples of fans losing it (and I do include myself in this) in POTC and, of course, HP. Fortunately, I didn't join the due South fandom until after the Ray Wars, but it sounded like all the kerfuffles I've lived through in my fannish life. People taking things too seriously. These are fictional characters. We don't own them, but we can sort of play with them. On and on. It was, in a way, like old home week. What should be nothing more than a fun romp through a book, a movie, or an album becomes major drama and angst.

Of course, I am salivating at the release of remastered extended editions of LOTR! One hopes they will clean up the Battle of Helms Deep. On my high-def TV, it looks pretty sad. Still thrilling as hell, but it doesn't look like real people or real horses. And, of course, there's Viggo.

comments

Amazingly, I still get comments from readers, don't ask me why. I haven't written anything new in years and yet the comments keep coming. I recently got a comment about asking me to tag for first-person POV. I'm waiting to respond because this person was very polite, and my knee-jerk response is to not be polite.

First of all, you may have noticed, I don't tag. I actually don't believe in tagging beyond fandom, pairing, auxiliary characters if I feel they play a major role in a story, and the degree of sexual explicitness. I think that people searching for their specific fantasy is detrimental to fandom as a whole. Because it supports the tendency in fandom for readers to demand that writers cave to their fantasy down to knickers versus briefs debate. I don't get too many comments that my interpretation of certain characters is wrong (usually Draco Malfoy for some reason), but I get some. This is fucking fanfiction. The only person who's writing the "correct" or "proper" Draco is J.K. Rowling. So, the bottom line is if you don't like my interpretation, don't read me. It's that simple. I'm not fulfilling your fantasy, fine. Find someone who does. There are lots of people writing fanfiction who tag like crazy. If my approach doesn't work, click away.

I may be wrong, but I do believe the thrust of this comment is about first-person POV, which I find is a totally unreasonable and WRONG, yes, WRONG supposition that first-person POV is inferior and an infantile approach to writing fiction. I couldn't disagree more, and I'm happy to say that Charlotte Bronte agrees with me. Is there anything more powerful than, "Dear Reader, I married him."? I DON'T THINK SO. Let's look at this. "She married him." I think the difference is more than obvious.

I don't think first-person POV works for all characters. It works especially well for those characters who have inner conflict or who are unreliable narrators or whose twisted POV can lead the reader down a garden path to a stunning Ah Ha! at the end of a book. It's a tool. Just like third-person POV is also a tool. It all depends on what tools you want at your disposal. When speaking in fandom, I think that characters like Draco Malfoy and Severus Snape are tailormade for first-person POV because it is difficult, IMO, to get the full range of their conflict in even a close third-person. But you may disagree. I just refuse to choose one over the other as being better.

Case in point, I've never written a first-person story in SGA because those characters don't lend themselves to first-person POV. They are too closed off personality-wise. John is an utter bitch to write at the best of times, and it's only with some real coaxing that I can write a story of him in third-person POV. He fights me all the time, Rodney not so much, but he's still third-person POV material. Most of my HP is written in first-person POV for the reasons listed above. Again, it's all a tool, one isn't better than the other, IMO.

Also, the story in question? The first SENTENCE contains the dreaded "I." So that reader spent approximately three seconds to click open the story and easily determine that it was written in first-person POV. To me, this seems ridiculous. I spent months writing this story and yet the three seconds it took for their eyeballs to see that horrible, no good, very bad "I" prompted them to request that I tag for first-person POV. Nope. Nope. Nope. Not doing it.

Again, there are lots of fandom writers who write in close third-person POV. Enjoy.

Note, I did tag for this post! HEE!

comments

Because I am the best (or worst) Luddite in the world, it's only recently that I realized that I could look at my stats on A03. I know, I know. I'm a moron. Anyway, here it goes.

Most hits overall (the top five in descending order): The Politician's Wife (no surprise there) (HP), On One's Knees (wee bit surprised but it was a HP World Cup entry so I think that accounts for it) (HP), Room Serviced (surprise there but it was one of the first fics I wrote in the HP fandom so it has longevity in its favor, plus Dramione fans are devoted) (HP), Planet Sherlock (wow a very nice surprise!) (BBC Sherlock), and Bite Me Hate Memes (knock me over with feather or as Draco would say, fucking hell) (HP).

Most kudos overall (the top five in descending order): The Politician's Wife (HP), On One's Knees (HP), Room Serviced (HP), Planet Sherlock (BBC Sherlock), and Let's Pretend the War Is Over (HP).

Most comments overall (the top five in descending order): The Politician's Wife (HP), State of Mind (HP), Room Serviced (HP), On One's Knees (HP), and Snape the Home Fries Nazi (HP).

Most bookmarks overall (the top five in descending order): The Politician's Wife (HP), On One's Knees (HP), Room Serviced (HP), Planet Sherlock (BBC Sherlock), and Snape the Home Fries Nazi (HP).

Most words overall (the top five in descending order): Your Move (POTC), State of Mind (HP), The Politician's Wife (HP), Dumbledore's Lost Boys (HP), and Bite Me Hate Memes (HP)

This in interesting in that if I were to be asked what my personal favorites are, I'd list Dumbledore's Lost Boys, Your Move, and State of Mind, in that order. I guess I appreciate a novel-length piece of fiction because I'm a character-centric writer and sometimes it takes 50-60,000 words to say what you want to say. Also personally interesting is that I did haul writerly ass working on Dumbledore's Lost Boys as it was written for one of the last fests I participated in, but it took me LITERALLY years to finish both Your Move and State of Mind. And I mean years. But now they are done, and I'm happy with how they both turned out.

Least words overall (the top five in descending order): Ribbon Me This (HP), Tell Me (BBC Sherlock), The Silent Treatment (HP), The Wind Blows (POTC), and A Dialogue (dueSouth).

Clearly, the Harry Potter fandom wins out here, but I'm surprised that there are no contenders from SGA, but then I entered that fandom on the tail end of its popularity. I've always seen myself primarily as a slash writer, and yet the only two Dramione fics I have written FAR outstrip any of the other fics I've written in fandom period. Fascinating stuff.

comments

This is wildly AU. So AU as to be ridiculous. But it was originally written something like two decades ago, so the ending was never going to be anything but wrong.

No beta.

You know, I said I wouldn't finish this, but I am such a fecking completist.
